Glynis & Jeffrey Murphy
At the age of 23, Jeff Murphy married Glynis, the woman he had been praying for. After a few years of wedded bliss, their marriage began a downward spiral as a result of being inadequately trained in the skills necessary for a successful marriage, the demands of a budding career, the arrival of two children, and their own selfishness and immaturity. A growing sense of frustration and isolation infected their hearts and home.
It was out of this despair, that Jeff and Glynis began their quest to learn how to be successfully married – a journey that has now continued for over 26 years. It began with going to the FamilyLife® Weekend to Remember conference, which they continued to attend for several years before becoming the New Jersey Conference Co-chairmen. While deeply studying the topic of marriage and developing new marriage skills, they began sharing their story with other couples in small group studies and
investing their time in marriage ministry through their local church. Marriage ministry and couple mentoring has been a part of their lives ever since. Over the years, they continued to field test and refine their mentoring approach and the resources they use. The wisdom from that journey has now been integrated into the highly acclaimed book, The Solution for Marriages. Glynis is the author of chapter 14 of this book.
Jeff holds a Bachelors degree in Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology and a Masters degree in Business Administration from Seton Hall University. After 30 years at Johnson & Johnson, he retired in order to devote more time to marriage mentoring initiatives and serving as a personal mentor to men in several states and as a friend and advisor to pastors. Glynis holds a degree in Dietetics and works part-time as a nutrition counselor. She also enjoys encouraging other women and fun times with their grandchildren, Willow and Dillon. They have two grown children.
Jeff and Glynis are both certified by Life Innovations as PREPARE/ENRICH Marriage Mentors. Jeff is also certified as a PREPARE/ENRICH Seminar Director, training pastors, counselors and lay couples to be effective marriage mentors. In 2013, Jeff and Glynis co-authored an eBook, Pursuit of Passion: Discovering True Intimacy in Your Marriage, which addresses the topic of emotional, spiritual and sexual intimacy in detail. Jeff and Glynis also enjoy encouraging tens of thousands of couples each day with marriage tips on Twitter as @MarriageMentor and @PursuitOPassion as as well as on their Facebook pages – facebook.com/CrossTrainedMarriage and facebook.com/PursuitOfPassionBook.
Mae & Chuck Dettman
Chuck came to know Christ at age 11. He learned the meaning of “obedience” from personal experience while straying from Jesus during his early adult years. He rededicated his life to Jesus after hearing “his story” told by another Christian veteran who suffered similar hurts and anguish. Romans 6:21 asks us, “What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!”
Mae and Chuck met in 7th grade, dated in High School, and married in 1969 just prior to Chuck’s Viet Nam tour.
They began mentoring in home Bible studies and saw how their Christ-centered relationship was “different” from others. Though far from “perfect,” their marriage and commitment to Christ demonstrated a peace and happiness that intrigued other couples. This became the opportunity to mentor other couples and to teach them to work at their relationship and grow their love for one another (with Christ) each day.
Chuck and Mae have two adult children, Glynn and Barbara, and six grandchildren and one great grandson.
Executive Director and Founder of Today’s Promise, Inc., Chuck is an ordained minister with more than 15-years in couple and professional life-coaching experience. Chuck has become one of the premier marriage, relationship, budget and career coaching mentors in the nation — having been recognized by the NY Times, CBS Evening News, and the Harvard School of Business, among others. Chuck holds a Bachelor of Science in Business and Finance from Barry University, graduating Cum Laud. He was formerly employed by the U.S. Under Secretary of the Treasury in local banks as a loan officer, Junior Vice President, and Auditor which provided unprecedented exposure to the financial industry.
He holds many certifications including a former Florida State teaching certificate as an Occupational Therapist for Secondary Education and a Certified Crown Financial Budget Coach/Counselor. He is a Certified Marriage Mentor for PREPARE/ENRICH marriage preparation, and he coaches those already married. He holds certification as a Seminar Director for PREPARE/ENRICH, providing training to clergy, professional counselors, and mentor couples. He proudly serves as a 15th Judicial Circuit Court Registered Provider for marriage education, qualifying couples for discounted marriage licensure. He is a Master Instructor for START SMART, a premarital training course that teaches specific skills to seriously dating or engaged couples.
